Playwriting
The Utah Theatre Association is pleased to announce our annual Utah Young Playwright's Festival. Any Utah junior high or high school student who is registered for the UTA Conference 2012 is eligible to submit a script. Outstanding scripts receive staged readings at the conference, and the top playwrights are presented with cash awards. This Playwriting Handout will give you more details for submitting a script to the festival. Questions about the Utah Young Playwright’s Festival can be directed to Mitzi Mecham.

Scholarship Auditions/Interviews Workshop
Any teacher or student who wants to prepare for future college auditions and interviews should attend the Utah Theatre Association Scholarship Workshop. This workshop is for anyone wanting to get tips for scholarship auditions and interviews along with portfolio and display hints. Students do NOT have to be seniors to attend - in fact juniors are especially encouraged to attend. In order to reach more students, we are conducting three simultaneous workshops across the state. All locations will share the same information and coaching. You do NOT have to be a UTA conference participant to attend these workshops - any high school students may attend and get ideas for preparing for a college/university theatre program. This Scholarship Workshop Handout will give you the details on when, where, and what to bring to the workshop.

Acting Scholarship Auditions
High school seniors participating in the Utah Theatre Association Conference have the opportunity to participate in Acting Auditions. These auditions give students a chance to present a two minute audition to representatives of colleges from throughout the West. Based on these auditions, students may be considered for admission or scholarships to the represented college and university theatre programs. Additionally, cash awards from the Utah Theatre Association are awarded at the end of the conference to stand-out auditioners.

Melanie Day from Box Elder High School is in charge of the acting auditions. In the past, there have been two separate acting audition opportunities: Scholarship Auditions and Open Auditions.  We no longer have two separate auditions, but will instead be conducting two days of scholarship auditions. Click here for acting audition information

Students wishing to audition must be recommended by their teacher, submit 30 resumes to Melanie Day at Box Elder High School, and prepare their two minute auditions. Only students who are planning to major or minor in Theatre are encouraged to audition at the Utah Theatre Association Conference. UTA also encourages students to contact the colleges and universities on an individual basis for a personal audition and interview. More information will be posted here in the fall.

*Forms are made to be printed, filled out and mailed. They are NOT online registrations forms

Attention: The college/university representatives have requested that any students auditioning with musical theatre songs sing to live accompaniment only. The Utah Theatre Association supports this request and will provide a professional audition accompanist for any students singing at their scholarship auditions. Auditioners must bring their own sheet music to the audition. If they do not already own a copy of their music, they can peruse the following websites to purchase individual copies of their music choice.

Technical Theatre Scholarship Auditions
Steve Schmid at Taylorsville High School and Agnes Broberg at Timpanogus High School are the contacts for the Technical Theatre Auditions. Technical Theatre Scholarships are available through a display and portfolio process. As with the acting auditions, seniors will have an opportunity to meet and interview with representatives from colleges and universities from throughout the West. In addition, cash awards for technical theatre displays are presented by the Utah Theatre Association to students during the conference.

The Utah Theatre Association is also very pleased to offer technical theatre students a chance to display their portfolios to be considered for the Design Utah Award. This award has been sponsored by Oasis StageWerks for the past 16 years and includes a $1500 scholarship.
